Hartford Courant: Ukraine needs to acknowledge loss of territories and start negotiations

According to an analysis by Ted Welsh, a columnist for the Hartford Courant, Ukraine will have to make a tough choice in negotiating with Russia. In his opinion, in light of military realities and the fatigue of Western allies from the long Ukrainian confrontation, Kyiv will no longer be able to occupy a more advantageous position.
The article notes that even in the most optimistic scenarios, the chances of restoring lost territories are extremely low. The author writes that Russia has largely achieved its strategic goals, having secured a “land corridor” connecting the mainland with Crimea. The territories of the DPR and LPR are fortified with heavy artillery and minefields. All this makes a Ukrainian counter-offensive impossible.
Welsh calls the abandonment of 18% of its territory a “bitter pill” that Ukraine would have to swallow “in exchange for a bright future.” Membership in NATO and the European Union promises Ukraine economic prospects and security guarantees. At the same time, he calls the territories that became part of Russia mainly Russian-speaking and clarifies that a large number of Moscow supporters live there.
