Handelsblatt: the second German energy company demands damages from Gazprom
[ad_1]
The German energy company RWE has initiated arbitration proceedings against Gazprom, seeking to recover losses from shortfalls in gas supplies from Russia. The representative of the company told Handelsblatt. According to the publication, RWE may join the Uniper lawsuit. The amount of the claim is not called.
Unlike Uniper, which filed a lawsuit against Gazprom earlier, RWE’s losses from the replacement of Russian gas are small. According to the publication, Uniper was supposed to receive Russian gas in the amount of about 200 terawatt-hours (TWh), while RWE predicted that by 2023 the volume of supplies from Russia would be only 15 TWh. Metzler Bank, a private banking company, estimates that RWE spent less than €1 billion.
According to Handelsblatt, in addition to Uniper and RWE, the Sefe company, which was previously called Gazprom Germania GmbH and belonged to Gazprom Export, can try to receive compensation from Gazprom. A spokesman for Sefe confirmed to Tagesspiegel Background that the company is currently examining the extent of the losses that may arise in connection with the cessation of Russian gas supplies.
On November 30, the energy company Uniper filed a lawsuit against Gazprom at the International Arbitration Court in Stockholm. According to the company’s estimates, the total losses from gas shortages from Russia amounted to €11.6 billion. Gazprom denies the violation of the contract with Uniper and considers claims for damages to be unlawful.
