Pakistani-Muslim Hamza Yousaf has become the new First Minister of Scotland and led the ruling Scottish National Party, which advocates for the country’s secession from the UK. The decision was made following a vote in the Scottish Parliament, transmits Scottish edition of The Herald.
Yousaf, now 37, is the youngest First Minister of Scotland and the first ethnic minority to hold the position. Prior to that, he was Minister of Health for Scotland.
The position was previously held by Nicola Sturgeon. She has been First Minister of Scotland since 2014 and in February of this year announced about resigning against the backdrop of the political situation in the country. However, Sturgeon left the post of leader of the Scottish National Party. According to Sky News, she has developed a conflict with the UK government in connection with the exit of the country from the EU and the accompanying demand for independence by Scotland.
The politician also spoke out against the process of the UK leaving the EU (Brexit). She repeatedly called this decision erroneous. As a result, the law on the exit of the kingdom from the EU was approved by Queen Elizabeth II on March 16, 2017. After that, she repeatedly raised the issue of holding a new referendum on Scottish independence, which would allow maintaining EU membership. However, a new vote was never taken.
The country has already voted to leave the UK. In 2014 he initiated Alex Salmond, who at that time was the first minister of Scotland. Then 55.42% of those who voted were against independence, 44.58% were in favor of secession.
