Guterres sends letter to Putin with ideas to improve grain deal

UN Secretary-General António Guterres sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin with proposals for the implementation of the Russian part of the grain deal. This was announced on Wednesday, July 12, by the official representative of the Secretary General of the world organization Stéphane Dujarric.
According to Dujarric, the purpose of this message is to remove obstacles to financial transactions through the Russian Agricultural Bank, which the Russian side has repeatedly insisted on, as well as to simultaneously allow the continuation of the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.
The UN said that Moscow had already received the letter and was considering it. From the Russian side, comments on this matter have not yet been received.
Russia has repeatedly warned that the part of the Black Sea food initiative concerning the export of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers has not been implemented. At the same time, Moscow’s comments were ignored, although the correction of shortcomings was the main condition for prolonging the grain deal until July 17.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara, as one of the parties to the grain deal, continues negotiations with a view to extending it and studies the proposals of the Russian side. According to the politician, “Mr. Vladimir Putin also has a number of proposals, we have taken them into account and continue our efforts at negotiations.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pointed out that the efforts of the UN did not give a result on the grain deal in the part that concerns the Russian Federation, and therefore there are no prospects for extending the agreement after July 17.
