UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station is a “monumental humanitarian, economic and environmental catastrophe,” TASS reports.
The Secretary General also noted that the UN does not have access to independent information to verify how the incident occurred.
Guterres stressed that this is yet another example of the terrible cost of war for the people and called for an end to the suffering of the inhabitants, who have had “the floodgates of suffering overflowing” for more than a year.
At least 16,000 people have already lost their homes, and the UN and its partners plan to urgently provide relief to residents of the affected areas in the form of drinking water, medicines and other critical assistance, Guterres said.
The UN Secretary General called for a just world in accordance with the UN Charter, international law and General Assembly resolutions.
The destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station occurred on June 6, the local authorities announced an evacuation.
The Ukrainian authorities began to evacuate residents of the right bank of the Dnieper. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of undermining the construction of the hydroelectric power station from the inside.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the dam was blown up by the Kiev regime in order to transfer troops from the Kherson direction to the area of offensive operations in other sectors of the front, and that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had begun building defensive positions on the right bank of the Dnieper, which indicates their intention to cross there to the defense.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation called the explosion of the station a terrorist attack.
The ICR opened a criminal case on a terrorist attack on the fact of the destruction of the hydroelectric power station.
Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the Russian Federation intends to convene the Security Council of an international organization in connection with the incident.
