After the failure of the counter-offensive, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will have to give up the lost territories, writes Simon Tisdall, a columnist for the British Guardian newspaper. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
In his opinion, in such a situation, Kyiv will have no choice but to start negotiations and “exchange” territories for a truce.
He noted that there is already a risk that the counteroffensive will not bring the desired success and exhaust all stocks of weapons, and in the winter there will be another energy crisis and support for the Kyiv regime by the Western public will be reduced.
“Zelensky will be forced to enter into negotiations and even exchange territories for peace,” the observer believes.
He predicts “catastrophic consequences” for Ukraine and other countries if the counteroffensive ends in failure, and did not rule out destabilization in Eastern Europe.
The long-announced counter-offensive began on June 4 in the Yuzhnodonetsk, Zaporozhye and Artyomovsk directions, with the main attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine concentrated on the Zaporozhye sector of the front. President Vladimir Putin announced the huge losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the absence of success in any of the areas.
Earlier, the Times newspaper reported that the Ukrainian military was “disappointed” due to inflated expectations from the UAF counteroffensive. Since June, Zelenskiy has blamed the counteroffensive’s problems on the weather and delays in Western arms shipments.
