IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi will meet with an interdepartmental delegation in Russia on April 5 to discuss the situation at the Zaporozhye NPP. This was announced by the Permanent Representative of Russia to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel.
“One of these days, the day after tomorrow, it will be [Рафаэля Гросси] another meeting with the Russian interdepartmental delegation on the territory of Russia,” said Ulyanov (quote according to RIA Novosti).
On March 29, the IAEA delegation headed by Grossi arrived at the ZNPP. This is the second visit of the head of the IAEA to the station since the beginning of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. During the trip, Grossi, together with the adviser to the General Director of the Rosenergoatom Concern, Renat Karchaa, inspected the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. During the trip, the head of the IAEA declared about the intensification of hostilities around the ZNPP and called for measures to be taken to protect the plant.
March 31 Grossi notedthat a nuclear incident at the ZNPP could lead to irreparable consequences for the whole world. Then he confirmed that he plans to arrive in Russia in a few days, where he will continue consultations.
Previously, the head of the IAEA came to Moscow on February 9th. Then Ulyanov said that Grossi had new ideas for the protective zone of the Zaporozhye NPP. The IAEA Director General began promoting the idea of a demilitarized zone after visiting the ZNPP on September 1, 2022. On March 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declaredthat the countries approached an agreement on the initiative, but it was blocked by the Ukrainian authorities. March 23 Grossi informedthat the IAEA abandoned the idea due to “territorial issues”.
ZNPP has been under Russian control since the end of February 2022. On September 30, the Zaporozhye region, as well as the DPR, LPR and Kherson region became part of Russia. Then the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin ordered to transfer the Zaporizhzhya NPP to federal ownership. Rosenergoatom became its operator.
