Grossi: uranium munitions pose no immediate radiological threat

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said on Tuesday that munitions containing depleted uranium pose no direct radiological risk. He expressed his position after a meeting of the UN Security Council, answering questions from journalists, TASS reports.
Grossi stressed that it is important to understand the difference between such projectiles and the situation that may arise in Zaporozhye. He said: “This does not create an immediate radiological emergency. This is a risk of a different nature.”
The head of the IAEA noted that the agency is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to study the consequences of the use of depleted uranium munitions, if requested.
At the end of April, British Undersecretary of Defense James Hippie confirmed that the UK had sent Ukraine thousands of rounds for Challenger 2 tanks, including those containing depleted uranium. However, he added that London does not control their use and is not responsible for eliminating the consequences after the end of the conflict.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov also noted that those who plan to use depleted uranium munitions should be aware that they are causing irreparable harm to themselves and their citizens, and will be held accountable for this.
