After the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region, a serious situation developed at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, but measures were taken to stabilize it. This was reported to journalists by the Director General of the International Atomic Safety Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi.
“On the one hand, the situation is serious, there are consequences and they are real. On the other hand, a number of measures were taken to stabilize the situation,” he said (quote by Interfax).
Grossi estimates that there is now enough water in the cooling pond to operate the station.
Alexei Likhachev, General Director of Rosatom, spoke in turn about the eighth rotation of the IAEA mission at ZNPP. Now, instead of two, four people from Austria, France, Korea and Morocco will be present at the facility. Next week, the state corporation is planning face-to-face consultations with the IAEA. “I express my support in general to the IAEA, the head and members of the mission, they demonstrate personal courage,” leads his words TASS.
The breakthrough of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station occurred on the night of June 6. As a result of the incident, 11 out of 28 spans of the station were destroyed, after which an uncontrolled discharge of water began. The water level reached approximately 11 m.
Grossi had previously warned that in the medium term the station could be left without cooling water, damaging the reactors. Earlier, Rosenergoatom reported that water for the needs of ZNPP would be taken from artesian wells.
