What is vetiver and where did this popular perfume ingredient come from?
Vetiver is a perennial herb native to southern India. Vetiver essential oil was obtained from the root system of the plant and used to make perfumes and incense, calling it the “oil of tranquility”. Now it is used in the Ayurvedic tradition to relieve headaches and reduce fever. As a perfume ingredient, vetiver is valued for its fixative properties and is used to stabilize other, more volatile or delicate perfume compositions. It is considered a purely masculine and is an integral part of classic colognes, but recently it has become more often used in women’s fragrances.
