Turkey is trying to turn back time and revive the Ottoman Empire, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said after talks with her French counterpart Catherine Colonna in Athens, who also visited Ankara the day before. This was reported by RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
“Maps appear on which the Greek islands are designated as Turkish. The Turkish side claims that these islands are under Greek occupation. Appears constantly <...> that “they may suddenly come at night,” that is, invade these islands. And I would like to remind you that opposite the islands of the Aegean Sea there is the largest amphibious fleet in Europe and a full-fledged Turkish army, ”said the diplomat.
NATO allies – Greece and Turkey – have repeatedly found themselves on the verge of armed conflict due to territorial disputes. Tensions reached a new level on August 23, when Athens, according to Ankara, deployed Russian S-300 air defense systems to target F-16 fighter jets during a NATO mission. Greece denies this.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the neighboring country of dire consequences in case of further escalation, recalling the massacre in Smyrna (Izmir) a hundred years ago.
Ankara stated that it was waiting for an objective assessment from NATO regarding the incident. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that Athens ignores international law, good neighborly relations and friendship. In turn, the Greek Foreign Ministry stated that Turkish officials undermine the cohesion of NATO, about which Athens intends to inform its allies and partners.
