In 2022, global patent activity continued to grow, with approximately 3.46 million applications filed, which is 1.7% higher than in 2021. As noted in the annual report of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of patent applications has increased for the third year in a row. Continuing a long-term trend, the bulk of IP applications are filed in Asia, with the region accounting for 67.9% of patent applications in 2022. Compared to 2012, the share of patent applications in the Asia region increased by 11.9 percentage points, a result mainly driven by sustained growth in patent activity in China, which accounted for approximately 1.58 million patent applications in 2022 (an increase of 3. 1% after 6.8% a year earlier), or almost half of all applications in the world. The top five also includes Japan (405 thousand, a decrease of 1.6%) and South Korea (272 thousand, an increase of 1.9%). In relative terms, the leader in the growth rate of the number of patent applications is India – plus 31.6%. Record growth from a low base has continued in the country for 11 years and reached 55.7 thousand applications. In Russia, the number of applications decreased in 2022 by 3.7%, to 22.3 thousand.
Most often, patent applications at the end of 2021 affected computer technologies (11.1% of all applications), electromechanics (6.4%), control and measuring equipment (5.8%), medical technologies (5.2%) and digital communications (4.9%).
At the same time, at the end of last year, the number of applications for trademarks (by 14.5%, to 11.8 million applications) and industrial designs (by 2.1%, to 1.48 million) decreased – 67.8% and 70 .3% of them, respectively, also occurred in Asian countries. The decline at WIPO is explained by the fact that in 2020-2021 there was an unprecedented increase in such applications – the pandemic stimulated the emergence of new goods and services on the market, but now, obviously, the market has reached saturation. Applicants from China were also the most active there, with their applications covering 7.7 million product classes. The main area in which applicants sought trademark protection abroad was research and technology (22% of all applications). The same was observed during the registration of industrial designs – 841 thousand were registered by applicants from the PRC. Globally, the largest share of applications (17.2%) concerned furniture and household items.
