Berlin insists on the inclusion of restrictions on the Russian civilian nuclear sector in the next package of sanctions against Russia, reported Reuters with reference to the Ministry of Economy of Germany.
“The federal government has spoken to the European Commission for the inclusion of the civilian nuclear sector. This should be part of the next package of sanctions,” they said.
According to the head of the department, Robert Habek, nuclear technology is an extremely “sensitive” area in which preferential treatment under sanctions is unacceptable.
“It can’t be ‘business as usual’ anymore,” he said.
Germany believes that the EU should act decisively, but the restrictions should be introduced gradually.
The foreign media wrote back in January that the Russian nuclear sector could be subject to sanctions – Poland and Lithuania, in particular, insisted on this.
Kyiv throughout 2022 repeatedly demanded that Brussels impose sanctions against Rosatom.
At the end of January, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that Hungary would impose veto on any initiatives of EU anti-Russian sanctions in the field of nuclear energy. “We will not allow the implementation of the plan to include nuclear energy in the sanctions. This is out of the question,” Orban said.
At the end of February, the United Kingdom imposed sanctions against the top management of Rosatom. At the state corporation then declaredthat such restrictions jeopardize international nuclear security.
