German exports unexpectedly fell sharply in December

German exports in December 2022 amounted to 127.4 billion euros, down 6.3% compared to November, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Then the supply of Germany was at the level of 136 billion euros. This was the sharpest month-to-month drop since April 2020 (the peak period of the pandemic), when exports fell by 24% compared to March (from 99.8 billion to 75.8 billion euros). According to the Dow Jones & Company consensus forecast, a fall of 3.5% was expected.
Imports fell by about the same amount. As a result of December, Germany imported goods and services worth 117.4 billion euros, which is 6.1% less than the November figures of 125 billion euros. German imports hit a peak since 2018 of €134.4 billion in August 2022, after which they began to decline steadily: by 1.9% in September (compared to the previous month), by 2% in October and by 3.1% in November, according to Destatis data.
