German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht asked Chancellor Olaf Scholz to relieve her of her post, transmits publication Welt, citing the minister’s statement.
“The media, focusing on my person for several months, is unlikely to allow coverage of the facts and discuss decisions about soldiers, the Bundeswehr and security policy in the interests of German citizens,” Lambrecht said. As a result, she decided to resign.
According to the publication, the minister has been criticized for several months, she was repeatedly called to vacate her post. Critics blamed her for a “sluggish” start in procurement for the Bundeswehr or a lack of experience, and criticized her public appearances.
“A photo of her son traveling in a Bundeswehr helicopter made negative headlines. She recently caused irritation with a New Year’s Eve post shared on Instagram (owned by Meta, a recognized extremist organization in Russia), in which she spoke about military operations in Ukraine, accompanied by New Year’s fireworks, ”writes Welt.
Lambrecht became the second minister to resign since Scholz took office. In April 2022, Anne Spiegel resigned as Minister for Families, Women, Senior Citizens and Youth following allegations of neglect in her previous position.
