Georgia’s revenue from road freight transit has grown significantly

For seven months of this year, the income of the Georgian budget from the movement of foreign cargo trailers along the country’s roads amounted to 10 million lari ($39,230 million). This was reported by the Georgian business publication BM.GE with reference to the Department of Road Transport of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, as well as the State Treasury.
In total, 291,189 trucks passed through Georgia from January to July. If in July 2022 39,177 trailers used Georgian communications, then in July of the current – 43,436.
Last June, when interest in Georgian roads increased largely due to a special Russian military operation in Ukraine, the government of Irakli Garibashvili increased the transit fee for each trailer from 200 lari ($62 at the exchange rate of June 2022) to 350 lari ($109). As a result, for the entire 2022, the local budget received an income of 128 million lari, while in 2021 the income amounted to only 66 million lari.
BM.GE experts suggest that revenue by the end of 2023 may exceed 200 million lari for the first time. Moreover, the number of trucks crossing the Georgian border this year is steadily growing from month to month: 34,404 in January and 47,017 in June.
During a recent visit to China, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said, commenting on a meeting with Chairman of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, that China is “interested in developing a “middle corridor” through Central Asia, the Caspian Sea and the South Caucasus.”
The Georgian prime minister made it clear in an interview with Chinese television that Beijing is showing interest in building the deep-water port of Anaklia on the Black Sea coast “to export goods to the EU along the shortest route.”
