Georgia’s foreign trade turnover has grown significantly after the West imposed sanctions against Russia

According to data According to the government statistics agency, in 2022, the country’s foreign trade turnover amounted to $19.043 billion, which is 32.8% more than in 2021.
Particularly noteworthy is the unprecedented growth in exports, by 31.8% – $ 5,592 billion this year. At the same time, imports also increased, to $13.45 billion, which is 33.2% more than last year.
Trade turnover significantly exceeded all “pre-pandemic” indicators:
- 2021 – $14.34 billion;
- 2020 – $11.39 billion;
- 2019 – $13.31 billion
In December 2022, Georgia exported a record amount of goods worth $555.8 million. This is 32% or $136 million more than in December 2021.
Imports in December amounted to $1.37 billion, up 31%.
It should be noted that, according to the practice adopted in Georgia, re-export is considered a part of export and is subject to general statistics. Re-exports in Georgia especially increased last year after the start of the military operation in Ukraine and the imposition of Western sanctions against Russia.
