Georgian Prime Minister warned of the collapse of the country’s economy in the event of sanctions against Russia

Georgia’s economy will be destroyed if Georgia joins the sanctions against Russia. This statement was made by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili during his speech at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha.
“Georgia’s trade turnover with Russia is less than $1 billion. For comparison: the EU only trades for four days [с РФ] what we trade in a year. It’s funny, isn’t it? Our share in Russia’s foreign trade turnover is 0.3%, and what is the logic? The Georgian prime minister recalled that because of the conflict in South Ossetia in 2008, no one imposed sanctions against Russia, in contrast to the situation with Ukraine. “Where is the logic?” he said. At the same time, Garibashvili stressed that Georgia supports Ukraine, complies with international sanctions against Russia and is in favor of an early cessation of hostilities.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the United States, Great Britain, the EU countries and other states imposed large-scale sanctions against the Russian Federation. At the same time, the Georgian authorities stated that they were not going to introduce restrictions, since this does not correspond to the national interests of the country. In March 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky recalled the ambassador from Georgia, explaining his decision by Tbilisi’s refusal to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation and supply weapons to Kyiv.
The pressure on Georgia has intensified due to the resumption of air traffic between Russia and Georgia. At the US State Department admitted the imposition of sanctions against Tbilisi in the event of the return of direct flights with Moscow. Earlier today, May 24, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova named Washington’s threats to interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
