Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili addressed the population, calling on them to join in the celebration of the country receiving candidate status for EU membership. This news was disseminated by the government’s press service, noting that the decision of the European Council to grant Georgia this status was made on Thursday.
“Today Georgia has become a European state and a candidate country for the European Union. This is a collective victory, the result of our work. I invite everyone on December 15 at 17.00 (16.00 Moscow time) to Freedom Square to celebrate this historical event for the country and our people,” it says Prime Minister’s statement.
The European Council’s decision on Georgia follows the granting of EU candidate country status to Ukraine and Moldova at the June 2022 summit in Brussels. However, Georgia was not previously included in this list, and the granting of status was subject to the fulfillment of 12 conditions. According to the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in September of this year, Georgia was able to implement only three of the 12 conditions established by the European Commission to achieve the status of a candidate country.
