Georgia announces arrival of Saakashvili supporters from Ukraine to participate in protests

Supporters of ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili arrived in the country in order to take part in demonstrations against the law on foreign agents, said Vice Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic Georgy Volsky.

“This refers to the political team that is now headed by [Леван] Khabeishvili, and to this was added the fact that, one can say for sure, a certain group of supporters of Saakashvili came from Ukraine, these are fighters who will try, using this youth energy, not to remove this revolutionary process from the agenda, ”said Volsky (quote according to TASS).

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, the events in Georgia, caused by the situation with the bill on foreign agents, are reminiscent of the Kiev Maidan. He stated that there is no doubt that the bill was just an excuse to start “an attempt to change power by force.” The minister also noted that the protests in Georgia are “orchestrated” from outside in order to create a tense situation near the borders of Russia.

Earlier today, the Georgian Parliament rejected in the second reading the bill “On Transparency of Foreign Influence”. The second draft “On the registration of foreign agents”, which is considered the “American” version of the initiative, was also withdrawn.

After the adoption of the bill on foreign agents in the first reading on March 7, protests began in Tbilisi. The actions continued on March 8 and 9. Earlier today, after the official withdrawal of the bill from Parliament, the protest was completed.
