The leadership of Georgia, after calls from representatives of Ukraine to open a “second front” against Russia, may organize a referendum to find out the position of the population, transmits Sputnik Georgia, citing Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
“We can hold a poll, a plebiscite and ask the people if they want a second front to open in Georgia. We can follow what the people say. Let’s see, let the people make a decision in this regard – they agree with the officials of the government of Ukraine or with us,” he said.
According to Kobakhidze, the country’s leadership does not support this idea. He noted that high-ranking officials of the government of Ukraine “cannot hide the desire” to open a “second front” in Georgia and involve the country in a military conflict.
The day before, Verkhovna Rada deputy Fyodor Venislavsky said that the Georgian people have a unique opportunity to force the authorities “to take concrete steps and liberate Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” since Russia is now completely focused on Ukraine.
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed the country’s unwillingness to join Western countries’ sanctions against Russia. He noted that the country trades with Russia, and almost the entire population of the republic participates in this process. “I pose the question: when it comes to imposing sanctions, what are you asking me to do? Do you want me to impose sanctions on my people? Who will suffer from this? Of course, our people, population, economy will lose their income, a million of our citizens will suffer, who, for example, will not be able to transfer money, ”he noted.
