GDP growth slowed in the fourth quarter of 2023 – Kommersant

By data Department of Research and Forecasting of the Central Bank, GDP growth continued in the fourth quarter of 2023, but its pace slowed down compared to the third quarter. The department noted that the indicators of incoming flows of the Central Bank payment system and PMI indices have worsened. There is also a decrease in optimism in industry, recorded by IEP4 surveys.
The department’s material cites Rosstat data published at the end of 2023. They present a calculation of GDP based on a preliminary assessment of the acceleration of economic growth in the third quarter. “Operational statistics indicate continued growth in the fourth quarter, but a number of indicators indicate a slowdown in its pace compared to the third quarter,” the Central Bank says in its materials.
At the end of December 2023, Rosstat increased the estimate of Russian GDP growth in 2021 by 0.3 percentage points (to 5.9%), lowering the estimate of the decline in 2022 by almost half – to 1.2% from 2.1%. According to Rosstat, GDP growth in the third quarter was 5.5%, and in nine months – 3% in annual terms. According to the Ministry of Economy, in November 2023, GDP exceeded the 2022 level by 4.4%, and the 2021 level by 2.1%. In general, based on the results of 11 months, GDP grew by 3.3% year-on-year, compared to the level of two years ago – by 1.2%.
