Gazprom will supply additional volumes of gas to Hungary by winter

Russian company “Gazprom“will supply Hungary with additional volumes of gas in the coming autumn-winter period; this year Moscow has already exported 1.3 billion cubic meters. m of gas, said Gazprom Chairman of the Board Alexey Miller.

“This year, the additional volume has already amounted to 1.3 billion cubic meters. m of gas. In September 2021, Gazprom and the Hungarian company MVM CEEnergy signed two contracts that provide for the supply of a total of 4.5 billion cubic meters. gas per year for 15 years. Of these, 3.5 billion cubic meters. m of gas per year fall on the supply route through Serbia (via the Balkan Stream – a continuation of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline), 1 billion cubic meters. m – through Austria.

In August 2022, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said that Hungary had signed an agreement with Gazprom, according to which, from September 1, 2022, an additional 5.8 million cubic meters of gas would be supplied to the country. m per day (equivalent to 2.12 billion cubic meters per year) through Turkish Stream and Serbia.

In April 2023 Hungary agreed extension of the agreement with Gazprom on possible supplies of Russian gas to the republic in excess of the volumes provided for by long-term contracts. In its turn “Gazprom» reported that the company would “consider the possibility” of supplying above-contract volumes of natural gas to Hungary in 2023 and applying deferred payment for these supplies.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the republic then warned about the risk of stopping industry if Russian gas is abandoned. They stated that 85% of annual gas consumption in Hungary comes from gas from the Russian Federation, and such a volume cannot be replaced in the foreseeable future. The country’s Foreign Minister Petr Szijjártó also said that Turkish Stream will allow Hungary to receive the required volumes of Russian gas bypassing Ukraine if transit through the latter is stopped.
