Gagauzia will secede from Moldova if the state authorities decide to unite with Romania. The head of the Gagauz autonomy, Evgenia Gutsul, warned about this on Friday, April 5.
The politician assured that Gagauzia intends to continue to defend the sovereignty of Moldova along with the powers and rights of the region.
Gagauzia is an autonomous territorial entity within Moldova. It was formed in 1994 from settlements, more than half of whose residents are Gagauz. The autonomy also included cities and villages, the majority of whose residents voted in favor of this in a referendum.
Back on March 20, Hutsul stated that the Gagauz autonomy is not considering the possibility of secession from Moldova, since the Gagauz people consider it their homeland. She expressed confidence that in the future, disagreements between the region and the central authorities of Moldova “will cease and be forgotten.”
However, then the idea of uniting Moldova and Romania was again voiced, which was rejected in Gagauzia. At the same time, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku supported the merger of the two statesnoting that this could also happen due to Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
