Gagarin Avenue in Kyiv was renamed in honor of the first cosmonaut of Ukraine Kadenyuk

The avenue in Kyiv, which bore the name of the world’s first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was renamed in honor of the first and only Ukrainian cosmonaut Leonid Kadenyuk. This was reported on Tuesday in the press service of the City Council of the Ukrainian capital.
“Yuri Gagarin Avenue was named after the Russian pilot-cosmonaut,” the text of the message says. “In order to decolonize the metropolitan toponymy … a new name was chosen.”
The press service also informed that among the options for renaming, the proposal to name the avenue after Leonid Kadenyuk won the largest number of votes.
The decision was made by electronic voting, the idea was supported by more than 21 thousand people of Kiev.
Earlier in March, 16 capital streets were renamed in Kyiv, whose names were associated with Russia and the USSR, the mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko, reported.
