FT: Zelensky stated a higher priority for Kyiv’s admission to the EU than funding

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky told the leaders of the European Union (EU) that for Kyiv the highest priority is starting negotiations on the country’s membership in the association rather than additional funding. The Financial Times reports this, citing officials.
“Zelensky privately told EU leaders that it was more important for him to get consent to negotiations on membership in the union than consent to funding,” the published material says.
In addition, Bloomberg reports that Zelensky also said that Kyiv needs to receive a signal that Europe is not abandoning Ukraine.
It is worth noting that earlier Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban spoke out against the allocation of a new tranche for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros, as well as against the start of negotiations on Kyiv’s membership in the EU.
