FT: EU says new sanctions against Russia are ‘done’

The European Union has probably reached the ceiling after the imposition of the 10th package of sanctions against Russia. The sectors of the Russian economy left without sanctions are critically important for a particular EU country, therefore, possible restrictions will be vetoed, writes the Financial Times (FT), citing unnamed European officials.
“We’re done. If we impose more sanctions, there will be more exceptions than measures,” said one of the interlocutors.
Sources working on anti-Russian sanctions have suggested that as a constraint, the EU will now expand the list of sanctioned individuals and tighten measures against circumvention of already adopted sanctions. Informal discussions on proposals for the 11th package of sanctions will begin on April 21.
At the end of March, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced new restrictions against the Russian Federation. She stated that the 11th package of sanctions will be aimed at combating circumvention of restrictions.
Since the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the EU has already adopted 10 packages of sanctions, the last of them on February 24. Under restrictions hit a number of Russian citizens, departments and companies. In particular, the sanctions affected three banks – Alfa bankRosbank, “Tinkoff jar”.
The European Council President Charles Michel spoke about the limit of the EU’s ability to impose restrictions against the Russian Federation in February 2023, even before the adoption of the 10th package of sanctions. He noted that the new sanctions are aimed at “tightening the loop” and preventing attempts to circumvent restrictions. “When you have already taken the main measures, there are not many additional things that you can do” – said He.
