FT: China refuses to meet with the head of the Pentagon due to US sanctions

Chinese officials made it clear to the United States that a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu and Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin is not possible in the near future, writes financial times.
Washington is trying to arrange a meeting between Austin and Li Shangfu in Singapore. There will be a regional security forum “Shangri-La Dialogue” on June 2-4.
The Chinese side pointed to the sanctions imposed by the United States against Li Shangfu back in 2018 for the acquisition of Russian Su-35 fighter jets and S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems.
According to journalists, although Beijing has not yet given an answer, the Chinese will certainly refuse this proposal.
It is emphasized that the US presidential administration does not intend to exclude Li Shangfu from the sanctions list.
At the same time, the Pentagon assures that they are interested in having working channels of communication with the Chinese military.
