The expert assessed the next indexation of pension payments

The State Duma adopted a law increasing insurance pensions for non-working pensioners by 7.5% from January 1, 2024. This decision will affect more than 32 million citizens. Can indexation be called sufficient, what amount could cover all the expenses of older citizens, and should working pensioners count on indexation? MK was looking for answers to these and other questions.

The State Duma adopted a law increasing payments to non-working pensioners. For example, the fixed payment will be 8,134.9 rubles, as noted in the bill. In 2023, the amount of such payment is 7,567.3 rubles. The new rules also propose to increase the cost of one pension coefficient, which is used in calculating the size of the insurance pension. Its cost in 2023 is 123.8 rubles, and in 2024 it should reach 129.5 rubles. Now, according to the amendments, the cost of one pension coefficient in 2024 will be 133.1 rubles.

As State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin previously emphasized, the document will allow an increase in old-age insurance pensions by 7.5% from January 1, 2024; the new norms will affect more than 32 million citizens of the country.

An increase, even a small one, is always perceived positively. But can pensioners count on additional gifts from the authorities in 2024?

Ivan Samoilenko, managing partner of the communication agency B&C Agency: “Everyone’s pensions are different, depending on length of service, salary level at the previous place of work, regalia, etc. Therefore, we can expect that, on average, taking into account the indicated indexation, pensions in Russia will increase from the new year by 1.5-3%. And this dynamics is definitely positive, because pensioners belong to the category of the least protected population, any increase for older people will be noticeable. In addition, we can expect that different decisions will be made next year regarding the pensions of working pensioners, since indexation for this category has been postponed more than once. It is possible that other initiatives will be reviewed to improve the financial situation of older people and pre-retirees. The latter category of citizens is also becoming a priority for the state in terms of filling the shortage of personnel that is currently observed in various sectors of the country’s economy.”
