More than 300,000 people took part in mass demonstrations across France today against raising the retirement age. This was reported by the BFMTV channel with reference to the calculations of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country.
On Saturday, the seventh nationwide strike against the pension reform project took place. Around 230 protests were reportedly planned throughout France. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 368,000 demonstrators took part in them, in Paris – 48,000.
These indicators do not coincide with the data of the trade unions. The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) claims that in Paris alone, 300,000 people took to the streets with slogans against the pension reform.
Law enforcement officers used tear gas against the most radical participants. According to the prefecture of the Paris police, 26 people were detained during the procession.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Born introduced a bill in January that calls for raising the retirement age in France and abolishing “special” regimes for a number of difficult professions. The authorities are going to raise the retirement age by three months a year from September 1, 2023. Thus, by 2030, the retirement age will reach 64 years.
