Frederik Andre Henrik Christian, the 55-year-old eldest son of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Prince Henrik, became the new King Frederik X of Denmark after his 83-year-old mother abdicated the throne.

The Queen’s abdication ceremony took place today at the Royal Christiansborg Castle. Margrethe II previously announced in her New Year’s address that she would abdicate the throne on January 14, marking the 52nd year of her reign. She remained on the royal throne longer than all her predecessors.

Note that the new Danish king is the great-great-great-grandson of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I and the great-great-great-great-grandson of Paul I.
