Ministry of Energy of France: termination of the contract on nuclear fuel would be too beneficial for the Russian Federation
French Energy Transition Minister Agnès Pannier-Runachet said on the BFM Business TV channel that the French side is not going to cancel the contract with Russia for processing regenerated uranium from spent nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, since such a refusal will not cause the damage necessary for the EU to the Russian side, but vice versa will be very beneficial for the latter.
As Pannier-Ryunashe said, the refusal “will bring too much benefit to Russia compared to what the treaty brings to them now, so we will not serve Russia”
The French minister’s statement was made on the eve of today’s meeting of representatives of 16 interested European states, where it is planned to discuss ways to reduce dependence on Russian nuclear energy. Discussions on measures for such a “reduction” take place as part of the preparation of each of the EU sanctions packages, however, as a rule, a consensus cannot be reached, primarily due to the efforts of Hungary, for which the refusal of contracts with Rosatom will entail extremely sensitive economic losses.
