France convenes a meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the aggravation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, transmits AFP agency, citing information from the Elysee Palace.
“France will appeal to the UN Security Council on clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, in which at least 49 Armenian soldiers were killed,” the report says.
France will bring this situation to the discussion of the UN Security Council, in which it currently chairs, the agency notes.
The aggravation of the conflict on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border occurred on the night of September 13. According to the Armenian side, from midnight, Azerbaijan began to conduct intense fire in the direction of the settlements of Sotka, Goris and Jermuk in the southeast of the country from artillery pieces and large-caliber weapons. According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, at least 49 people from the Armenian side died as a result of the conflict. Data on losses from the Azerbaijani side have not yet been given.
In turn, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan reported that the reason for the aggravation was “intensive shelling over the past month of the positions of the Azerbaijani army in the Kalbajar, Lachin, Dashkesan and Gedabek directions and large-scale provocations committed today,” and placed all responsibility for what happened on the military leadership of Armenia.
Baku and Yerevan, through the mediation of Moscow, were able to agree on a ceasefire from 09:00 Moscow time. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed the need to observe the ceasefire in accordance with the tripartite statements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia dated November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 26, 2021.
