Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul said that in order to receive American F-16 fighters, Ukraine could sign a document in which it would assume a number of obligations, the fulfillment of which is necessary to prevent escalation.
In a column for Foreign Affairs diplomat writesthat the Armed Forces of Ukraine need to strengthen their capabilities in the air, in particular, in the Soviet-made MiG-29, as well as in “advanced drones” like the American Gray Eagle and Reaper.
“Ukrainian pilots should also be trained to operate the F-16. In the future, the Ukrainian Air Force should switch from Soviet and Russian-made aircraft to American models. In return, President Volodymyr Zelensky could sign a legally binding agreement not to use these aircraft to strike targets in the territory Russia,” writes McFaul.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Berlin, despite the decision to supply Kyiv with Leopard 2 tanks, “under no circumstances” intends to send military personnel or combat aircraft. He also noted that, together with US President Joe Biden, he continues to oppose the creation of a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
