Former State Department adviser Phillips said NATO’s mistakes led to the Ukrainian conflict

Former US State Department adviser David Phillips said the current crisis in Ukraine stems from the 2008 NATO summit. He wrote about it in an article for the National Interest.
“The roots of today’s crisis can be found in the final communiqué of the 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest, which stated that Ukraine would one day join the alliance,” he said.
Phillips noted that this statement caused alarm in Moscow. And the situation escalated even more when the United States supported the Ukrainian Euromaidan. The politician believes that Washington had the opportunity to calm Russia, but if any measures were taken, it was too late.
Phillips also criticized the pace of arms deliveries to Kyiv. He noted that at first Ukraine was only supplied with bandages and bulletproof vests, and then with old Soviet equipment. According to him, there are fears that in the near future Washington will stop supporting Kyiv in the same volumes as now.
