Former Pakistani PM Khan arrested after court hearing

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested in Pakistan after a meeting of the High Court of Islamabad. About it informed TV channel Geo.

It is specified that the former prime minister was arrested on a warrant from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of Pakistan in a corruption case. Presumably, we can talk about the sale of gifts that were received from foreign leaders.

On April 9, 2022, the parliament of the republic passed a vote of no confidence in Khan and removed him from power. Then 174 out of 342 deputies voted for it, with the necessary 172. According to the ex-premier, foreign states, in particular the United States, were behind his removal.

March 19 Associated Press reportedthat the Pakistani Islamabad police charged Khan and his 17 assistants with terrorism and other crimes. In addition, accusations were brought against supporters of the ex-premier – this was preceded by the riots that took place outside the courthouse on March 18, where Khan was called to testify on charges of bribery.

Supporters of the former prime minister threw incendiary mixtures and stones at the police, after which the police fired tear gas. As a result of the skirmish, 50 police officers were injured, a police checkpoint, several cars and motorcycles were set on fire. 59 Khan supporters were detained.

The protests themselves began then at Khan’s house, where the police arrived to detain him. Law enforcement agencies did not find the politician, as he allegedly left for the court, but did not appear at the meeting. Khan later blamed the police for his failure to appear, because, according to him, due to the tear gas used by the police, he was unable to leave the car.
