Former Secretary of State – First Deputy Minister of Defense, Army General Igor Puzanov, died yesterday, October 22, at the age of 77, reported Interfax with reference to the chief of staff of the Russian Military Leaders Club, Nikolai Deryabin. According to the agency, Mr. Puzanov was struggling with a long illness.
Since July 1992, Igor Puzanov served as first deputy commander of the Moscow Military District, and in April 1999 he became commander. In the spring of 2001, he was appointed Secretary of State – first deputy head of the Ministry of Defense. At the beginning of 2004, this position was abolished. In 2005, he was appointed commander of the Leningrad Military District. Until recently, he worked in the Office of Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense.
In December 2007, he was elected to the State Duma; due to this, he was transferred to the reserve from the armed forces. In 2007–2011, he was a member of the State Duma Committee on Defense, and also served on the commission for reviewing federal budget expenditures for defense and state security needs. Resigned on January 26, 2012.
