Former District Judge Sheindlin: Bout is not a terrorist, but a businessman

Former US District Judge Shira Sheindlin, who previously sentenced Viktor Bout to 25 years in prison, said she considers the sentence too harsh.
She clarified that Bout was caught by law enforcement agencies for a crime that, in principle, he was not going to commit, he was detained as part of a special operation of the White House.
Recall that Bout was found guilty of preparing a conspiracy to kill US citizens and material support for terrorism. He spent almost 15 years in an American prison, and on December 8 he was released as a result of an exchange for American basketball player Brittney Griner.
“I thought that Booth received a very harsh sentence. He most likely did not intend to commit this crime. He was contacted by undercover agents, he himself did not get close to the Colombian terrorist organization. It was set up by the US. I would give him a shorter sentence if I could,” Schneindlin said.
She added that she would have sentenced Bout to at least 10 years in prison.
