Former Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulidis wins presidential election

Former Foreign Minister of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis won the second round of the presidential elections, which took place in the republic on February 12. This follows from the results published on the website of the Ministry of the Interior.

Based on the results of processing 100% of the ballots, Christodoulides won 51.92% of the votes, 204,680 people voted for him. His opponent, former Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Andreas Mavroyiannis, received 48.08% of the vote. RIA News” clarifiesthat both candidates were independent, Mavroyiannis was supported by the main opposition party, the Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL).

Final voter turnout amounted to 72.2%, which is lower than the level recorded in the presidential elections in 2018 – then 73.1% of voters participated in them.

The name of the new president of Cyprus will be officially announced by the chairman of the electoral commission, Kostas Constantinou, at a special ceremony at the Tassos Papadopoulos-Eleftheria stadium.

On February 6, the first round of elections took place in the republic, as a result of which Christodoulidis and Mavroyiannis won 32.04% and 29.6% of the vote, respectively. The current president of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis, did not run in 2023. He has served as president of the republic since 2013. Averof Neofitou, the ruling center-right party Democratic Gathering (DISI), won 26.11% of the vote.
