Former British Ambassador to the USA: Crisis in Congress threatens support for Ukraine

The crisis in the US Congress could jeopardize future support for Ukraine, former British Ambassador to the US Lord Darroch said in a comment to Sky News.
According to him, the race to replace Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House of Representatives could “continue for quite some time.” This will mean real problems for Ukraine, since the United States supplies about 90% of the military equipment entering Ukraine, he said.
“I myself do not believe that Europe has the opportunity to make up for this. So, soon these reserves will begin to dry up,” the ex-ambassador added.
Lord Darroch said there was also a “long-term problem” when it comes to US support for Ukraine.
“It’s not just a few right-wing Republicans who oppose further aid to Ukraine. There is a lot of pressure from grassroots Republican voters to stop this—and that pressure speaks volumes,” he explained.
Without further Western support, mainly from the US, it will be “very difficult” for Kyiv to continue military operations in the long term, Lord Darroch said.
The former ambassador also said that Ukraine’s “victory” would not happen until 2024, so there would likely be “political concerns” that the war could continue indefinitely.
“If I were in Kyiv, I would be worried about what will happen next year when the American election season begins,” Darroch added.
