The Vienna Regional Court found former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz guilty of making false statements. He was sentenced to 8 months in prison, reports Heute.

The former head of the Cabinet of Ministers in the Federal Chancellery, Bernhard Bonelli, was also found guilty and given a suspended sentence of six months.

Both will be on probation for three years and both will have to pay the costs of the trial.

Previously, Kurz was accused of giving false testimony in June 2020, when, while holding the post of Chancellor, he denied his involvement in the decision to appoint his confidant Thomas Schmid to the board of directors of the Austrian state-owned company ÖBAG. The truth became clear after the prosecutor’s office checked Kurtz’s correspondence.

Kurz served as Austrian chancellor from 2017-2019 and 2020-2021.
