Attempts to involve NATO in solving the problem of chemical weapons sunk in the Baltic Sea can lead to disastrous consequences. This was stated to RIA Novosti by the director of the second European department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Belyaev.
According to him, the Russian Foreign Ministry is concerned about the activity of some Western countries on the issue of the recovery of chemical weapons and ammunition dating from the Second World War from the bottom of the Baltic Sea. He is convinced that this topic needs to be discussed at international platforms and in the Commission for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Baltic Sea Area (HELCOM).
Sergei Belyaev believes that in this matter it is necessary to take into account the opinion of Russia and other allied countries in the anti-Hitler coalition. You also need to pay attention to the environmental consequences. He added that the work of HELCOM is currently paralyzed by the actions of the West.
The Foreign Ministry representative emphasized that attempts to “bring up” the Council of the Baltic Sea States or NATO to this topic could lead to disastrous consequences for the entire Baltic.
