Foreign Minister Rinkevics elected President of Latvia

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics was elected President of Latvia. About it reported on the website of the country’s parliament.
In the third round of elections, Rinkevich was supported by 52 deputies of the Seimas, which exceeds the required number of votes under the Constitution of the republic – at least 51. 35 deputies opposed him.
Rinkevics has been the head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry since 2011. He was nominated for the elections from the New Unity party.
There were three candidates in total. Rinkevičas’ competitors were Elina Pinto from the Progressive Party and businessman Uldis Pilens.
Egils Levits has been the President of Latvia since 2019. He did not put forward his candidacy for the elections.
