Deputy Chairman of the Moscow City Electoral Committee Dmitry Reut said in an interview TASSthat foreign agents may run for mayoral elections in the capital, but they must indicate their status in all documents and publications.

“Foreign agents are not prohibited from participating in elections. They can not only vote, but even run for office. The only thing is that they should be indicated: in all media, in subscription lists, in general, in any publications. If a foreign agent is registered, then the ballot papers, informational and campaign materials should have the appropriate designation,” Mr. Reut said.

The deputy chairman of the Moscow City Election Committee recalled that the requirements for self-nominated candidates and candidates from parties are similar. The only difference is that self-nominated candidates, unlike party candidates, must collect voters’ signatures, Mr. Reut specified. Self-nominated candidates must submit from 38,000 to almost 41,000 signatures to the Moscow City Electoral Commission – a reserve is provided in case of errors in the signature lists, he said. At the same time, both party candidates and self-nominated candidates must collect 110 signatures from municipal deputies, the deputy chairman added.

Earlier today, June 2, to the Moscow City Duma was introduced project on the election of the mayor of Moscow on September 10. The decision to set the election date must be made no earlier than 100 days and no later than 90 days before voting day, that is, from June 2 to June 12.

Since October 21, 2010, Sergey Sobyanin has been the mayor of Moscow. According to Kommersant’s information, this year he will run for a new term from United Russia, and not as an independent candidate, as in the previous two elections. For Mr. Sobyanin, this will be the third election of the mayor of the capital. According to a recent study by Russian Field, 67% of all respondents and 74% of those who intend to participate in the elections are ready to vote for Sergei Sobyanin.
