Irina Alekseeva became the first athlete from Russia to compete in the UFC – a prestigious international mixed martial arts organization – under the national flag. The ban on Russian fighters wearing national symbols has been in effect since the spring of 2002. It was canceled on October 8.
This fight was Alekseeva’s second in the organization. In April, she made her UFC debut in a fight with Swiss Steffani Egger and created a sensation, forcing her opponent to surrender in the first round.
This time she was up against a debutant on the card, Briton Melissa Dixon. The girls staged a wild exchange of blows. The fight lasted three rounds. All of them, according to the judges, remained with the representative of Great Britain.
Alekseeva now has five wins and two losses in mixed martial arts.
