Finnish President Sauli Niiniste in his new year’s speech said that Russian leader Vladimir Putin made a mistake when he decided to start hostilities against Ukraine. He compared Putin’s mistake to the miscalculation of the Soviet statesman Joseph Stalin in the 1939 military campaign.
“If the Russian authorities believed that a large-scale threat would quickly bring Ukraine to its knees, then they made a serious mistake. One cannot help but think about the similarity of the situation with our winter war, when the Soviet Union assumed that it would enter Helsinki within two weeks. As leaders of the country with authoritarian rule, Stalin and Putin failed to see the key factor, that people living in a free country have will and convictions,” the Finnish leader said.
According to Sauli Niiniste, Putin also miscalculated when he hoped for a decrease in Western support for Ukraine. “We accepted the cause of the Ukrainians as our own. And support for Ukraine is only getting stronger,” he added.
