The Confederation of Finnish Industry has proposed creating a special economic zone in the areas bordering Russia. The organization explained that the introduction of tax breaks and other benefits will preserve the economic vitality of the eastern part of the country.
“We have to do something so that eastern Finland remains viable and business activity can grow stronger,” said Confederation Chairman Harri Broman to Yle.
He added that the organization conducted a survey according to which about 40% of companies in eastern Finland expect a decrease in profitability by the end of 2024. Mr. Broman also noted that the gap in the ranking of municipalities between the western and eastern parts of the country has increased significantly recently.
As measures, Harry Broman proposes to increase funding for regions in eastern Finland, invest in green energy, develop tourism and support small and medium-sized businesses. He sent the recommendations of the Confederation to the government of the country and the authorities of the regions of Kainu, Kymenlaakso, South and North Karelia, as well as South and North Savonia.
In 2020, create a special economic zone in south-east Finland offered Mayor of Savonlinna. Then it was proposed to include St. Petersburg.
