Finnish government resigns

The government of Sanna Marin in Finland has resigned, reported Finnish edition of Yle. Marin’s petition was accepted by President Sauli Niinistö.

The Finnish cabinet of ministers is resigning due to the loss of the Marin-led Social Democratic Party in the parliamentary (eduskunta) elections that took place on April 2. Then the National Coalition party won with 20.8% of the vote, the True Finns party came second with 20.1%, and the Prime Minister’s party won only 19.9% ​​of the vote and received 43 seats in parliament.

April 5 Marin statedthat she intends to leave the post of leader of the Social Democrats by the fall of 2023, when a new party leadership is elected.

Marin became the Prime Minister of Finland in December 2019 at the age of 34. The government headed by her became the 76th in the history of the country. Then the total number of ministers in the Cabinet was 19 people.

In July 2022, the prime minister got into a scandal over photos and videos from a party at her official residence, which showed Marin having fun in the company of Finnish celebrities. Later, at the request of the public, she passed a drug test, which turned out to be negative.

April 4 Finland signed document on joining NATO. Then the ceremony was attended by Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, who signed the accession document, President Niiniste and Finnish Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen.

On the same day, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov declared, that Finland’s entry into the North Atlantic bloc leads to an aggravation of the situation in the world, but noted that the case with Finland differs from the situation with Ukraine “radically”. According to him, there have never been disputes between Moscow and Helsinki and Finland has never become “anti-Russia”.
