Finnish Foreign Ministry: OSCE may fall apart because of Moscow and Minsk
[ad_1]
A split in the OSCE threatens due to the refusal of Russia and Belarus to support Estonia’s chairmanship in this organization.
According to Yle, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto expressed concern about the possible collapse of the OSCE in light of the unwillingness of Moscow and Minsk to approve Estonia’s candidacy for the chairmanship of the organization.
Thus, Haavisto said that if a consensus on the chairmanship is not reached in 2024 and a new leadership is not elected, then the coming year could be the year of the collapse of the OSCE.
OSCE rules stipulate that the chairmanship should be rotated between member states, and all 57 participating states must approve the country. However, this year Russia and Belarus did not support Estonia’s candidacy for the presidency next year. At the same time, Estonia itself is not ready to withdraw its candidacy.
This situation can create serious divisions and undermine the unity of the OSCE, because the absence of a chairman and the lack of agreement on this matter in 2024 can lead to the destruction of the organization.
