Finnish Foreign Minister Haavisto: Helsinki refused to deploy NATO nuclear weapons

Finland will not place nuclear weapons on its territory even after joining NATO. Such a statement was made on Sunday by Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, who was quoted by the broadcasting portal Yle.
According to Haavisto, Helsinki did not put forward a single precondition when applying for NATO membership. Nevertheless, the head of the foreign policy department insists that no nuclear weapons will definitely be placed on Finnish soil even after the country officially joins the bloc.
In addition, the diplomat said that Finland and Sweden form a single strategic defense unit, for this reason, the simultaneous filing of applications for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance by these countries is not just a courtesy. And under no circumstances will his country join NATO before its neighbor.
Haavisto believes that NATO membership will strengthen cooperation between the European Union and the alliance, as well as interaction between the Nordic countries. But he noted that the foreign policy vector of Finland will not change much: the EU will remain its main partner, and the implementation and protection of human rights – a fundamental pillar of the unity of Helsinki and Brussels.
